Canon's prototype HD camcorder
At the Canon Expo held this week in Paris, Canon’s CEO, Fujio Mitarai confirmed something that surprised no one - that Canon is lining up a High Definition camcorder. The company even rolled out a mock-up of a future HD cam, but we probably won’t see anything as cool as this for some while. The company’s debut professional HDV cam, the XL H1, launched a month so ago, and although I can't pretend to be any authority on pro HD cams it is certainly feature-packed and feels like a quality model. It'll be interesting to see if Canon sticks with the mini DV format for the HD cam or follows JVC and Samsung which have both stated that their debut HD cams will feature integrated, and probably very large, hard drives.
