SED - it really might be better than LCD and plasma

Canon_sed_panel The annoying thing about Canon's Expo, a showcase for its new products and upcoming technologies, is that it visits three countries in the space of a few months, So anyone who visited the Expo in New York last month got all the scoops. Nevertheless Paris did offer the opportunity of seeing some new technology close up and some of it was mind-blowing. The big story is Canon's  alternative to LCD and plasma -  SED or Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display.

Until I saw a demo of the sets I hadn’t taken the company’s claims that SED offered superior resolution to LCD and plasma very seriously. Yet in a direct comparison with LCD and plasma (and yes they probably had chosen cheap models and had tweaked them to deliver lower quality footage) SED looked far sharper and more detailed.

If you are interested in the technology there’s a load more here. Suffice to say that Toshiba is going to deliver its first SED set next year with Canon following in 2007. Canon also confirmed that it was seriously going to push SED with a new factory on the cards that will make the million SED sets by 2010. If as predicted SED sets come in cheaper than LCD or plasma, they really will have a good chance to establish themselves.

As of today, January 3, 2006, is there a projected date in which I will be able to purchase an SED TV here in the US?

Thank you.

Is it true the SED TV launch may be later this year than planned?

There have been several press released since 2004 but no actual dates for availability- these dates have come and gone with no product ever appearing on the market. The last date I heard was by mid 2006 the SEDs would be available in Japan and North America would follow later in the year.
Cannon and Toshiba seem to have adopted a common marketing ploy software developers use- get consumers excited about new software, called "vapour ware", many months before producing an actual product. If the SED is as good as it claims then why are they dragging their feet in getting it to market? I'm anxiously waiting to buy one if they ever appear on the market in my lifetime.

An update to my previous post:
Toshiba and Canon announced a joint development agreement originally targeting commercial production of an SED display by the end of 2005, but commercial products are now likely to first be available in 2006. During the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show, Toshiba showed working prototypes of SED displays to attendees, and indicated expected availability in mid-to-late 2006.[1] Toshiba and Canon have since pushed their plan to sell the television sets to the fourth quarter of 2007.[2] For this to happen they plan to start mass production in July 2007, coming to full speed in halfway 2008.
