BBC to show World Cup in HD (probably)

World_cup_logo Well footy fans I think there might be room for a little cautious optimism for the BBC is making positive noises about screening the World Cup in high definition. The corporation has confirmed to HDTVUK that it is in talks with both Sky and Telewest and that its stated aim is to trial top-level HD sports during the summer.

So in our books that’s not a resounding definite yes to the World Cup in HD, but a conditional one. It would surely be disastrous for both the Beeb and Sky if the games weren't shown in high def and  I'll bet sponsors like Philips are putting huge pressure on the broadcasters to sort it out.

Don't put money on it, but I'll be amazed if the full Sky launch in a couple of months time doesn't include a commitment to the Football World Cup in HD.

Incidentally the World Cup is being captured in HD by German broadcaster Premiere. Several HD stations across the globe have already confirmed that they will show the games in high def including US channel ESPN.
