Analysts speculate on PS3 drive speed

Blulogo_1 With an absence of many concrete PS3 details about at the moment, attention has turned to speculating on the drive speed of the highly anticipated console. Microsoft’s Xbox 360, although outputting games in high definition, held back on including an HD DVD player and that lets the PS3 make its integrated Blu-ray drive a massive selling point. But it will have to be careful not step on the toes of partner companies producing standalone players which leads some to believe that it will ship with a 1x or 2x speed drive that may well make it slower than the 360’s 12x DVD drive. Hopefully this won’t mean more of the achingly long loading screens so common in the PS2, some of which would make my ZX Spectrum blush.

All initial Blu-ray players are 2x (including burners). So who are these analysts predicting the use of 1x players?

Also, a 2x Blu-ray player can read DVDs at 16x. So a BR PS3 game may be slightly slower, but a DVD PS3 game may be slightly faster.

Thanks for your input Elo, I think the article originated at GameSpot but I'm not sure where the 1x speed thing came. You say all initial Blu-ray players will be 2x speed; is it not possible to build a 1x speed player then?

I'm have also been assuming that all PS3 games were going to be made on Blu-ray format but Sony hasn't really indicated either way yet. Any one know whether or not this is the case?
