HD DVD and Blu-ray delayed
You might have picked up a certain copy-protection theme
going on with the new disc formats and the unending battle against the scurvy
pirates seems to be giving Sony, Microsoft and co. a bit more trouble than it’s
worth. The latest hiccup is that the final specification of the Advanced Access
Content System (AACS), which is being integrated into both types of disc, has
been delayed. Now every new format player manufacturers has to sit tight while
it is sorted out. Ironically this could be seen as great news for Sony, because
until this morning it looked like HD DVD was going to get the first mover
advantage by getting a player to the market before the Blu-ray equivalent. Now
it looks like both types will be coming out at the same time and this also buys the
PS3, for which there is still no concrete release date, a bit of breathing
space.
