BBC launches HD service May 15

With the BBC promising to launch its HD trial service on May 15th (or a couple of days either side, a Beeb spokeswoman helpfully informs us), thoughts turn to how on earth we can pick it up. Initially BBC HD will only be broadcast on satellite (Telewest will carry it very soon - they seem a bit pre-occupied with the NTL-Virgin merger thing right now) which means that for now you'll need a digital satellite set top box.

Whether you'll get Sky's HD box in time is anybody's guess, but if you go this route you'll pay through the nose unless you subscribe to Sky's HD service for £10 a month. Basically Sky will charge you £399 for a box that won't offer any of the amazing SkyPlus functionality if you decide not to subscribe to its HD channels.

Which is why retailers like Turbosat are doing such brisk business on free to air box's like Humax's HD CI 2000. "We just can't get enough of them," says a Turbosat spokesman. "We've already sold out of one batch and we're expecting another one in soon. People are buying them like hot cakes in time for The World Cup." Featuring HDMI, DVI and component connections the Humax set-top box currently costs £299.

Does anyone know what else you need to get the Humax's HD CI 2000 to work? I have a pre-existing Sky installation although I ditched the subscription over a year ago. Do I need a freesat card?

Regarding the BBC's HD trials - in Austrlia I believe that the Terrestrial HD signals is in MPEG-2. However, there is speculation that the BBC will be using MPEG-4 - anyone heard anything about this?

maybe I've read your story wrong but the SkyHD box is £299 with free installation

the BBC and other UK HD broadcasters will be broadcasting in MPEG4 (h.264), not MPEG2 (the humax you mention is able to pick up h.264 so it will be fine). The dish you have should be pointing at Astra 28 degrees

What UK content can you get on this box? Can you get BBC1,2,3,4 etc. ITV1,2,3,4, Channel 4 and 5 and other stuff on Sky? If so why doesn't everyone get one instead of a Sky box?

You get ITV and BBC channels. But not channel 4 and 5 as they are FTV not FTA. this subject is controversial because once channel 4 and 5 go FTA (rumour has it channel 4 may be doing this soon)then the BBC will be able to create a Freesat service similar to freeview, however this will be available to the whole country unlike freeview which is only currently available to about 70% due to the service been broadcast alongside anaologue terrestrial. This could have the potential to put a further dent in skys subscription numbers as those not able to recieve freeview currently could choose freesat

Freesat is having the box, dish etc but without having to pay the yearly access card which is, to me, no better than just getting sky.
I was hoping hdtv would get a similar treatment to freeview but we know this won't happen till the switchovers complete in 2012 so i'm looking at alternatives. A hdtv set top box would be good if it is indeed free to view, other than the cost of the dish and box.

Gah wheres the edit button lol. I meant that first sectence to be a question about the freesat being just dish/box and not the yearly card right? Since having to pay for a viewing card would be no better than paying for something like sky's subscrition.

Freesat from sky allows you to watch free to view channels such as channel 4 and 5 because they supply the card there for it is not really a freesat service. If bbc were to lauch a freesat service now, box and dish would not give you channel 4 and 5 because of this. Once channel 4 and 5 go free to air then a true freesat service can be launched where you get all the main 5 channels fta.

Has anyonesuccessfully received a BBC HD signal on a Humax HDCI-2000? I've seen some reports on the net that the video signal cannot be received on the humax or pace HDTV set top boxes. The report cam e from a german website.
I was going to order a humax box today but the report really put me off.

You need the software update from Humax to get the HD channels.

Is there any way I can plug a freesat card into my humax box? The missus is getting pissed off missing Big Brother!
