An official release from Samsung now states that its debut player, the BD-P1000, won’t be launching (Stateside) until June 25th. Apparently this is to allow the manufacturer to complete its testing at a software level – the hardware is all ready for mass production in the South Korean plant.
To help ease the burden of waiting another month, Samsung has decided to up the specs of the machine slightly, now offering an 11-in-2 memory card slot. The two additional formats are MiniSD and Memory Stick Pro Duo.
The other features consist of full HD 1080p resolution support for both Blu-ray and upscaled DVDs via the HDMI interface. The price is set at $999 (roughly £575) but I’ll bet it costs a lot more than that when it reaches these shores. Needless to say there’s no confirmation of when it will be making a European debut.
The question is, with HD DVD already storming ahead in Japan, can Blu-ray afford to let its rival do the same in other territories?
