HDTV for Freeview this summer?

Hdtv_logo_1_1 Could we really see the World Cup on Freeview in high-definition this summer? Well, some could - if you're based in London.

The UK's four terrestrial broadcasters will offer Freeview digital viewers in London their first taste of HDTV this summer with a series of trial programmes. They are looking for 500 volunteers to test the service, known as DTT HD, which will include games from the World Cup in Germany.

If the trials are a success, there will still be one big hurdle to overcome - as things stand the Freeview service does not have sufficient bandwidth and probably will not have until 2012 when analogue broadcasting will cease.

That's a considerable way behind the other UK service providers. Telewest last month launched a service, while Sky has also confirmed a service starting, with orders being taken from April 12th.
