Tosh confirms HD DVD UK launch

Hdxa1 At a press event in Hertfordshire Tosh confirmed it will launch its HD DVD player this autumn. Already available in Japan and launching in the US this month (April 18th), the HD-XA1 will be the first high def DVD player available in the UK - several months ahead of players using the rival Blu-Ray DVD format.

The HD-XA1 is expected to cost in the region of £499 (it will cost $499) and is backwardly compatible with existing DVD discs. No confirmation of HD-DVD titles yet, but expect to see loads of Warner titles like King Kong, Dukes of Hazzard, Serenity and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Interestingly a Tosh spokesperson said he thought it would be unlikely that the first batch of HD DVD discs would have regional coding. This is apparently going to be introduced later on...

Serenity in HD will look shiny. And bloody incredible... But like hell am I going to be one of those bug-ridden early adopters ;)

That's pretty crappy that they're using that old direct $ -> £ conversion trick to set the pricing. They're paying £214 less than us in the States, which is appalling.
