BBC HD trial gets underway

Bbchd The BBC have conducted the first trial of their new HD service, officially launching on June 9th.

A lucky few households have been chosen to participate in the trial which has also seen the other main terrestrial providers involved in tests.

GfK NOP carried out a survey of 1500 people to establish their views on HD and the BBC's involvement with it.

  • 73% of the sample had heard of HDTV.
  • This figure was much higher amongst men (83%) than women (62%), and higher also in homes with digital TV (77%) than analogue homes (62%)
  • Of those that were HD aware, 87% said they expected the BBC to broadcast in HD in the future, with 93% saying they should be free-to-air.
  • 95% expected HD broadcasts to be available on all formats: cable, satellite and Freeview
  • 88% disagreed that those receiving HD programmes should pay a higher Licence fee.

Meanwhile, AV Zombie asks whether it will be possible to hack into the BBC HD experimental broadcasts, even if you're not part of the chosen test team.

Although these test broadcasts will ‘officially’ restricted to those using the Beeb’s test receivers, it may be possible for others within range to ‘tune in’ using PCs equipped with DTT tuners and H.264 software codecs.

Funny how everybody likes the video/audio experience of HD but doesn't want to pay for it. It clearly brings a higher production cost for the broadcaster so I think it is fair that it costs 'a little' more to the consumer.
