BBC's one-year HD trial enthusiastically backed by Director of Television

Jana_bennettThe BBC's increased HD programming from mid-May seems to be spearheaded by an enthusiastic Director of Television, Jana Bennett.

Despite some caution in the BBC's approach to its year-long experiment, Ms Bennett talks of her faith in the future of high definition broadcasting.

"Without HD being broadcastable [HDTVs are] selling very fast, so that tells us something," she says.

"I think it's a part of a trend towards a more cinematic [experience].

"Flat screens are a lot to do with it because they don't take up so much space, but I think big screen and big sound are the way the television market is going, and really why the DVD market is so successful."

The article makes some other points about the take-up of HD, and the BBCs involvement with it:

  • Once a technology becomes mainstream, competition increases, prices fall, and consumers accept it as 'normal'.
  • The number of HD programmes will increase over time - the BBC expects to offer 2-3 hours of prime-time HD output by July.
