One million Britons to buy HDTVs next year, survey suggests
New research suggests that between 800,000 and 1 million adults in Britain will buy a high-definition television over the next 12 months.
This estimate is based upon the percentage of HDTV-aware respondents (66%) who also said they were interested in the technology:
- 2% said they had HDTV already
- 7% said they were very interested in buying a HDTV
- 35% said they were quite interested
Those who knew most about HDTV were male (77%), ages 35-54 (72%), social grouping ABC1 (71%), and those working full-time (71%).
The primary feature most people (77%) thought of when thinking about high-definition TV was 'clearer picture'.
A potential barrier to take-up of HDTV, however, was the high percentage of people (57%) who were unaware that additional equipment, such as a set-top box, would be required to view high-definition programmes.
Jon Beaumont, director of Continental Research, who carried out the study, said: "It is likely that this lack of knowledge about equipment requirements will prove a barrier to some in purchasing an HDTV screen. They will also require HDTV-ready digital set top boxes that are likely to be priced at a premium in the initial stages of HDTV broadcasting."
I don't know how many people were surveyed, but if these results really are indicative of the great British public, then HD manufacturers and service providers should be feeling pretty pleased at this army of early adopters.
What do you think? Are you one in the million?

Waiting for a 1080p set with hdmi, dvi (hdcp enabled), component and a high contrast ratio say 3-5000:1. Not sure on size yet, probably gonna go for 32 inch since it will be for pc as well as watching films.
Unless of course theres something like this already available? ;o
