Sky's HD box: the first review

Sky_hdtv_box_7_1_2 Well after months of waiting today I finally got to have a proper look at Sky’s HD box and programming at the company’s HQ in west London.

For the best part of an hour I played and poked the box and sat and watched the new HD channels live. I get the system installed next week, so you’ll find a fuller review here soon. Until then though, here are my initial thoughts.

Just for the record demo was conducted in a lounge style room in the HQ using Sony’s 40inch Bravia LCD TV set the KD-LS4000

The box
Well Sky has done a good job redesigning the Sky+ unit. It looks a lot more stylish than its predecessor. You can check out the specs here, but the key part is that it has 160 Gigabytes of storage for your HD and standard definition recordings as well as a further chunk for Sky’s Push HD plans. Incidentally there’s still no word from Sky on this yet.

The remote control / interface
Sky sensibly hasn’t messed with the remote control. It is almost identical to the current Sky+ remote. The interface is marginally different in that there is a red button which gives instant access to the HD programming. You still access the planner/hard drive through the green button. There are also a few tweaks to the system set up menu including an option of recording in 576 lines as well as 720 and 1080.

The TV set… The PR from Sony told me that the set would only resolve 720 lines and that Sony’s next series of LCD Bravia sets would resolve 1080 lines. She added that the HD image would look significantly better on these sets. This is in keeping with what Sony has been saying about its TV sets, but Philips, and others, take a different view. For the full 720 Vs 1080 debate check here.

Finding HD
Sky has been fairly upfront about what content is HD originated and what is upscaled from SD. If the content has been shot in HD then the letters ‘HD’ appear in the info box. Almost all the content that Sky screened today was shot in HD.

Cricket in HD Cricket has been billed as a killer app for HD and Sky hasn’t disappointed us. Those greens certainly look green and you could see tremendous detail when the cameras tracked the crowds at the England Vs Sri Lanka game today. You could also see the marks the ball had made in the batsman’s crease and the graphics were amazing too, really vibrant. The difference between the pictures in SD and 720p was phenomenal. I can’t wait to see the Premiership in HD.

Documentaries
The trailer for Discovery’s HD channel also looked superb. The clip focuses on exotic locations and the viewer gets to see beautifully rich colours. The level of details of some of the animals was pretty stunning too.

Movies Movies also looks great in HD. Even a throwaway movie like Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo became very watchable. Venice looked gorgeous. I think certain recent movies will make the best of the format. It’ll be very interesting see Star Wars Revenge of the Sith, which is Sky’s big movie for opening night. The pay per view movies go for £3.75 a shot which is the same as standard definition films.

BBC HD
The BBC’s debut day line up of HD programming looks pretty unappealing. Fortunately in the afternoon they were showing an extended trailer which had pictures from Later with Jools Holland. I tried in vain to catch the lines on Elton John’s face which says to me that either he’s either weathered very well, or more likely been on the receiving end of some serious make up. The BBC footage had a pristine quality that some of the Sky footage lacked, which is probably because it was shot in a studio, whereas most Sky footage was either an outside broadcast or documentary based video. I can’t say for certain whether the Later footage was true HD, but even if it was upscaled it still looked really good.

Sky One/24
For me this was the weak link in the Sky HD package. The footage from 24 looked more like upscaled HD than it did true HD. To be fair I only watched a couple of  minutes of the programme and the shot were fairly dark, but then the dark shots on Sin City looked amazing.

Overall Well there is a clear leap on from standard definition through to HD. I would say that sport and movies are going to be very striking in high def and the documentaries really do take you closer to the subject than before. I am going to reserve judgement about the Sky One stuff, the price and the capabilities of the box until I get to take one home next week. Suffice to say that I can’t wait to get my hands on that box.

Sounds pretty amazing!

Thanks for the review but you did not mention anything about the user interface/menus and if they have been given a facelift?

Also and VERY important, do the component outputs work at the same time as the HDMI output and do they both output HD simultaniously?

Also did you see any evidence of digital artifacts (ie: blocks of pixels here and there) - I ask about this because Euro 1080 (the Luxemburg based HD channel) does show there artifacts and for example D-Theater (DVHS) HD is pristine and does not.

Can't wait till I get mine installed. Not for a few weeks yet though :(

Could you let us all know about how the Sky HD box copes with de-interlacing the 1080i sky broadcast to 720p for the Plasma TV or does the TV do a better job.

Is it possible to bring a Sky box over here to North America and get a signal, or are the satellites too low on the horizon or something?

Posted by: Andrew | May 16, 2006 1:06 AM

no, the US can't see our satellites and we can't see yours (the US has better, cheaper and more HD programming than us anyway)

the EPG is the same as old Sky boxes except for the red button bit

yes, you can output to HDMI, Component, RF & SCART RGB all at the same time with HDMI & Component being HD and RF & SCART being scaled down

cricket is in no way a killer app for most people, cricket is a minority sport, especially the further north you go

Hi all.

I had very limited time to ask techy questions. But I'll check again about the component and HDMI issue when the installation takes place next week.

There was no sign of any digital artefacts, but again I'll be able to give you a more informed view next week.

I think sport in general will be the killer app. The football will be amazing in high def, but I mentioned the cricket as Sky has continually said that it is one of the best uses of HD.

If anyone has any specific questions for the sky installer, or about the box ask away and I'll get answers next week.

Btw Digital Spy also have an excellent review, with the guy coming to similalr conclusions chekc it out here http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds33072.html

Hi, I work for myself & have completed sky's HD training & can confirm that the HDMI & Component outputs can both be used at the same time.

To those concerned folks with plasmas that do not have HDMI/HD ready inputs and are worried about how long and if the SKY HD component outputs will continue, consider this argument:

'Dear Sky, I bought one of your own 'SKY' branded 42 inch plasma TV's only a couple of years ago and it does not have any HDMI socket-I hope your own TV will work with SKY HD without problem? One of the reasons I bought the plasma at the time was because I was told it can display high definition using the component inputs. I kept my last TV for many years and i was assured by the salesman that your SKY plasma should last me a good number of years, in fact it is still under warranty-I would hate to have to ask for my money back if it is not compatible with SKY HD during it's reasonable product lifetime'

The review comments about the difference between cricket in 720p and SD. Was the cricket actually broadcast in 720p? I've read that Sky decided at the last minute that all its channels were going to be 1080i.

Livid...

Just thought I would send you a note from an extremely pissed off Sky subscriber - having received a letter AND a text message (last night) from Sky to confirm my HD install, the w*nkers didn't bother turning...or calling...or sending a text message....or sending an email...or making any effort whatsoever to contact me to tell me I would be wasting my time by taking a day off work.

Having just terminated NTL's cable service I thought I'd seen the back of woefully poor customer service, but it seems that Sky's Scottish call centre rates equally high on the cretin scale. Having spent 15 minutes on hold trying to get through I was told not to get angry at the person on the end of the line - it wasn't her fault after all. Well perhaps the person who's fault it is should have f-ing well called me yesterday to tell me they weren't going to come rather than waste my time and money.

I, like many others, have paid out a not insignifcant amount of money to Sky in order to benefit from their new service as a new customer. I thought that at the very least this would warrant some level of respect. How wrong I was, they're exactly like the rest of them - happy to take your money and walk away without the slightest worry.

I have been offered an install of Thursday or Friday but no time can be confirmed...oh and "we might not have the kit by then anyway"....

Rant over....a "manager" is calling me back to discuss further - I'd say the chances of compensation are slim to none so I've got nothing to lose by giving him an absolute ear full.

Yours,
Seething-in-South West London

Hi, i got a letter from sky to say that my HD date was changing, they said i would have to wait another 3 weeks until it would be installed. I called them and advised them that i ordered the sky HD the day i became available. They apologised and advised i could have my orginal date back and that i should not have been changed. I got in from work again today for a message to be on my phone that they have to change the date again. I yet again called and they apologised and advised my date would still be 15th June, lets just wait and see now if they actually bother to turn up !!!!

I just moved to Uk with my HD panasonic TV from USA ,will my NTSC HD plasma work using
two composite inputs or component (Y/Pr/Pb) input or HDMI input?

Has anyone connected a sky hd box audio to a surround sound system. If so what connections were used. My system does'nt have an optical input.

Posted by: norbret | October 8, 2006 4:46 PM

Having just had my sky hd box installed - It has been a rather anti climax. Not being a techno person, it took a call at 715am on Sunday for the sky service guys (2 sub-contractors) to tell me that the 'wasp' and scraping noise coming from the Thomson box was "normal due to the size of the hard drive". The ghost imaging that I was seeing behind the television picture caused by the fact that the system had not been set up by the installation guys (subcontractors again)to transfer the picture through the HDMI cable and was coming through a scart connection on AV2 "you don't need to have the scart connected at all." The picture quality is now fantastic, and PLanet Earth in HD is jaw dropping!
Still not convinced about the Wasp and scraping noise so I think a change of box is in order. HAs anyone else experienced this noise or am I starting with tinitus??

Posted by: Lizzy | November 20, 2006 3:41 PM

Can you tell me how to set up the remote link on the new hd box

Posted by: StuDuke | November 28, 2006 8:44 PM

i am a sky engineer, the wasp and scraping noise is normally the hard drive. However it shouldnt be able to be heard above the normal volume of your TV.
Also the customer services when Sky HD came out were at full stretch, and sky do not send out text messages to confirm appointments, so that must have been a sub contractor.

want 2 know if there is any hard drive avaliable 2 connect 2 the sata connection on skys hd box if not can i put a bigger hard drive in my box, once a few hd films n programs r on there it fills up pretty quick, any info would b appreciated

Hi,

I too am really up tight about the noise from the Sky HD box which gets on your nerves if you are in the room with the TV off.
I thought it was just me with the problem until seeing this site. Its either a crap design issue or they are pushing them out to soon before a good testing.

Why cant the fan turn off when the unit is in stand by?.

Thanks
Graham.

Posted by: Graham | April 24, 2007 10:19 AM

I have just swapped my + box for HD and the noise is so annoying - It surley can't be right to pay all that money for what l class as a sub-standard box - its not right. I will be contacting Sky and ask them to change the box or cancel the contract - suggest anyone else having this problem to do the same.

Posted by: Barbara | November 22, 2007 11:20 AM

Not just me, then!
The noise from the HD box is a disappointment. Its a sloppy oversight to let this get out into production.

HD, with surround hum.
