Sony's LCD HDTVs have evolved: Bravia S and V series

Sonybraviahdtv Sony have sent out a press release boasting that their new Bravia S and V ranges represent an evolutionary change in high-def LCD screens.

S Series

Amidst the usual acronyms, we're told that these screens solve the problem of washed-out colours and black turning to grey when the screen is viewed from the side. Apparently, these screens can be viewed with great definition up to a 178 degree viewing angle.

The new technology is called S-PVA (Super Patterned Vertical Alignment), which also has a contrast ratio of 1300:1.

“With the S-Series, people will see BRAVIA in action,” says Darren Ambridge, Group Product Manager, TV Marketing UK. “And that’s when they will know for certain that all LCD TVs are very far from being the same. We are confident that people will believe the evidence of their own eyes, and spend their money accordingly.”

V Series

Now the acronyms really begin. The Bravia V series uses Sony's exclusive Live Colour Creation technology, which particularly boosts reds and greens and makes pictures look more natural.

“Reds and greens are the most difficult colours to reproduce on LCD screens - and they are vital,” says Ambridge. “The challenge in creating a picture that people instinctively see as realistic is how to reproduce true, lively reds and greens while faithfully reproducing what we call “memory colors,” like human skin tones. That’s why Live Colour Creation is such an important part of what makes the V-Series special.”

The V Series has a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) Cold Cathode Flourescent Lamp (CCFL) backlight, and precisely optimised RGB filters within the LCD itself.

Both series' have an impressive 8ms response rate, which means high-motion sports and movie action are sharp and smooth.

Sound isn't overlooked, either, with fully digital amplification using SRS TruSurround XT and BBE Digital audio.

They're HD ready, sporting HDMI, in-built tuner, and will support 720p and 1080i signals.
