Sky had to have a big movie for HD opening night and it plumped for an obvious one in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. I must admit that I wasn't that impressed with the movie first time round, but wondered if seeing the film in HD, as well as knowing that I'd forked out for the privilege would make me more pre-disposed to it.
One thing is for sure though, as I later discovered later while watching the awful Jersey Girl, a bad movie is still a bad movie in HD.
In my opinion watching movies in HD isn't the huge leap you might have expected. This is maybe because I am used to a decent Progressive scan DVD player and a good quality LCD TV. I was lucky enough to be able to compare the DVD of the movie The Cat In The Hat with the HD version on Sky and although the HD version has the nod in terms of detail and colour the difference isn't as much as I'd hoped.
As for Star Wars though there was plenty of things I missed while watching the movie the first time round that I picked up while watching it in HD. Take R2D2 - the little fella has plenty of dents and even a bit of rust something I had never noticed before. I also noticed that Ewan Mcgregor has a fair few moles - not that man who is lusted after by half the women on the planet needs to care though.
The opening battle scenes were a little tedious last time round. In HD the level of detail made them slightly more intriguing. The best bits though are the cityscapes. HD gave the movie an amazing three dimensional effect with the cities in the background looking incredibly detailed and intricate. It must have taken the special effects team months to perfect this.
Annoyingly the lightsabers are still a blur in HD and some of the creatures, which look quite menacing in SD, actually look more comic in the higher def format.
I have got The Stepford Wives and Sideways lined up for the next few days.
Anyone else care to comment on Sith or any of the other HD movies?
