Improved LCD technology for HDTV from AU Optronics
Another day, another technology show... this time its the Flat Panel Display Show in Taiwan, and there AU Optronics will be showcasing their latest advances in LCD technology.
Not heard of AUO? Well, they are the third-largest manufacturer of large-size thin film transistor liquid crystal display panels (TFT-LCD), and with over 15% market share their product is in quite a lot of LCD TVs.
New technology specially designed for the HDTV era in its 37-inch panels includes Advanced Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment (AMVA), Simulated Pulsed Driving (SPD), HiColor Technology and Image Processing Technology. Well quite...
AMVA is designed to tackle the problems associated with colour distortion and washout with wide viewing angles. It also provides a high contrast ratio of over 1200:1. The result is a more comfortable viewing experience for the consumer, even on dimmer images.
SPD is designed to give CRT-like performance and quality, with a screen refresh rate of 4ms gray to gray, reducing motion blur. The technology can be applied to both 1366x768 and 1920x1080 resolutions.
HiColor Technology utilises CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) to reach 33% greater colour saturation than standard LCDs, using a new RGB LED backlight.
AUO's Image Processing Technology can dynamically adjust the contrast, sharpness, hue, colour temperature, and colour saturation to best accommodate the current image. It's particularly good for rendering precise details in dark scenes.
AUO claim that this new technology surpasses both traditional CRT, and plasma panels.
