Wimbledon in HD on the BBC next week

H_court_actionplus As much as I love the BBC's HD trailer, I must admit I am staring to get  a little bored with constant  clips of animals eating each other and ageing rock stars humouring Jools Holland. So the great news for me and other HD fans is that as from Monday during the day that trailer makes way for live coverage from the Wimbledon tennis tournament. This wil be very interesting for us HD-obsesives as it is the first time that we'll be able to watch live HD coverage that the BBC shoots itself - the World Cup feed is the preserve of HBS.

Tennis also brings with it a whole host of problems for HD camera operators in that the ball moves at very fast speeds. Given that LCD TV sets tend to struggle with fast moving objects it could be really interesting to see quite how successful tennis in HD is. It all kicks off on Monday at 12.55.

You can watch BBC HD via Sky, NTL/Telewest and Freeview (that is if you are one of the very lucky people on the trial). BBC HD programme listings are here.

But which sport gets priority when there's a clash - tennis or football?

I'll be very interested to see what the Wimbledon HD coverage will be like, as I've noticed with the HD footie coverage, that when playing the footie the picture blurs when the camera sweeps. This is especially noticeable when looking at the billboards, crowd etc. Someone has commented, when I posted this observation in the avfourms, that if you pause the picture while the camera panes you can see the blur and therefore it must be that the camera is using a "long exposure" for some reason.

I have a Philips 37pf9830 LCD screen which reports a response time of 6ms, so fingers crossed it not an issue with the panel. Although as I understand it at 1080i the Digital Natural Motion is N/A.

Have you tried setting your HD box to 720p? I have found this eliminates the worst of the 'blur' at the expense of only the fineset of fine details.

I think the blur is down to the TV trying to de-interlace the 1080i content.
