Sony introduce HDD DVD recorder with upscaling

The Sony machine refered to on this page has a number of series shortcomings and does not recird a series. Neither does it seem to be able to handle repeat recordings if these are meant to be daily.

In conclusion, the soeftware on my unit is faulty and I am awaiting for Sony to come back with a resolution of the issue.

I'm pretty sure they all do but this one will also record from an external box and it's for that the high bitrate mode exists.

I'm more puzzled by upscaling in players. A lot of consumers are likely to have a DVD player, a PVR and probably a legacy games console. Would it not be better to have a single high quality scaling processor in the screen rather than one in the screen, another in DVD and a third in the PVR?

These models have a High Bit Rate recording mode which record at 15Mbps onto the hard disc, a higher recording quality than DVDs offer.

that's completely useless, seeing as how freeview channels generally have a maximum bitrate of 4-5Mbps.

A bigger hdd would be better considering the higher bit rate used in recording which will ultimately use up more space per recording.

Also, i'd have expected Sony to release an upscaling player that went up to 1080p to coincide with their whole "True HD" sales pitch.

Unless they already have one, i'm not really up to date with upscaling players. :p
