802.11n wireless standard delayed

Wifi_1 Whilst it may not seem of immediate importance to HDTV, the news that the new 802.11n wireless standard is being delayed may come as a blow to manufacturers who are pushing their wireless, connected home and HD media streaming solutions.

A second draft of the 802.11n specification was due this Autumn, but now there are fears this could be pushed back to January 2007. This could push the whole programme back to 2008.

Despite this, some manufacturers have pushed forward and released equipment based on the first draft of 802.11n. Tests have shown that some of this equipment exhibits 'bad neighbour' behaviour - and is not compatible with other standards (such as the widely used current standard 802.11g) or indeed other 802.11n (draft) equipment.

I still think this doesn't bode well for consumers. After all, there's no point getting something that's not fully standard and then discovering that it doesn't play well with existing equipment. And in the HD field, you don't want your content stream interrupted or dropped by incompatible equipment. That probably isn't going to stop manufacturers pressing forward with the almost-standard, though.
