Aspect ratios: displaying pictures correctly
I've just read "Why does that new widescreen HDTV look so weird?" at George Ou's blog which explains with visual examples the issues surrounding displaying 4:3 and 16:9 content correctly. He says of people (in general):
"...they can't stand buying a brand new widescreen TV and see black bars on the sides and waste screen Real Estate. [One] user actually said "I let 4:3 stretch to 16:9" and he's probably very typical. So I decided to visually explain why this is such a bad idea and maybe then people will understand why their brand new widescreen TV looks so weird."
It might be obvious, particularly once you've seen the examples, but it's definitely something worth getting right. There are still plenty of programmes broadcast in 4:3 so even if you have a lovely new widescreen TV, you're going to run into this issue.

Sky should be FORCED to broadcast 4:3 shows in 4:3 not 16:9 AND use 720p as they said they would originally AND only show HD programmes on their HD channels !
Shame on you Sky !!
Still love it and couldn't live without it though . . . .
