Datacolor will be showing off its range of SpyderTV HDTV calibration solutions at the upcoming IFA exhibition.
SpyderTV can be used to revise the factory settings on consumer's HDTV sets to find the optimum colour display. It comprises a colorimeter (uh-huh), software and reference DVD, and measures contrast, brightness, colour, and colour temperature. It retails for £122.
SpyderTV PRO is aimed more at specialist dealers providing an installation service, and combines features for calibrating a TV or projector display, including optimisation of greyscales. It retails for £406.
One thing that concerns me is a point that a reader raised when I previewed a similar product; that of trying to calibrate a high-def TV using a standard DVD player. The reader commented that colours and greyscales, amongst other things, will need to be set differently for SD and HD output. So, I'm still a little sceptical about how well these solutions will calibrate a TV. Anyone have any technical specs on this?
