Films go head-to-head on Blu-ray/HD DVD

Hdtvbluray_3 High-Def Digest has done an extensive comparison of three films that have now been released in both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats, with some interesting results.

Using their controlled setup, each review looks at video and audio quality, additional content, ease of use and menu navigation.

The three films they've looked at are 'Training Day', 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang', and 'Rumor Has It...'.

Each format seems to have its advantages and disadvantages, and some comparisons are probably beyond what the average viewer would even notice, however HD DVD does seem to emerge the victor - albeit slimly on some titles.

Interesting points include:

  • Noticeable cropping of the Blu-ray picture - could be down to the authoring process or overscaling on the part of the player
  • HD DVD picture slightly brighter
  • Posterisation generally effects not as noticeable on HD DVD
  • Blu-ray 'severe' menu delays

It makes for interesting, if long, reading.
