Exchange rates and 'rip-off Britain' claims aside, there could be a near-£100 price tag on Microsoft's forthcoming HD-DVD drive for Xbox 360. At least, it is being touted with a US$200 availability in the US by Christmas, so hopefully it won't be too far behind.
Price wise, it could be the cheapest way to get into high-def DVD movies - even with the cost of the Xbox (if you don't already own one) it rolls in cheaper than the first crop of standalone HD DVD players.
Whether that situation will stay the same remains to be seen - and if you're not a gamer then you might not appreciate two boxes and power supplies cluttering your TV system when one unit would do the job. But for gamers who love movies (and who don't want the PS3) this could be a fantastic combo.
We'll have to wait and see just how expensive the drive is when it arrives in the UK, but there'd have to be a serious price hike for it not to compete admirably with other players.
