Sky to show all six Star Wars films in HD

Sky_6Sky have announced that they've done a deal with LucasFilm which will allow them to show Episodes IV, V and VI of Star Wars in high definition for the first time in the UK. They already have the rights to show the first three episodes.

That's quite a major scoop which deputy MD of Sky Channels and Services, Sophie Turner Laing, described as a significant addition, and an underlining of Sky's commitment to delivering the best movie experience to its subscribers.

No dates have been announced yet for their premiere, we'll keep you posted.

How can the first 3 epiosdes be shown in HD when they weren't filmed in HD?

They were shot on film. When they prepared to release the DVD's last year, the films were scanned in to a computer, cleaned and new CGI effects applied. The end result was 2K or 4K digital versions of the film that can be easily downconverted to 1080HD.
