At first I thought this story was along similar lines to HDTV being blamed for lack of exercise, but in fact it raises an interesting point that could affect any nation.
Two Canadian university professors have claimed that Canada's integration of HDTV would limit the amount of traditional programming, as smaller local program providers are ignored in favour of high-def US offerings.
While many US broadcasters have already upgraded their services from SD to HD, Canada has not.
"If we don't look at the move to HD, then none of our programming will be sellable," said New Democratic Party heritage critic Charlie Angus. "We won't be in the game."
It's an interesting thought - when HD becomes the mainstream in the UK (though that could take quite some time) will providers who can't compete on that stage, due to higher production costs, lose out because no-one wants to watch SD content any more?
