Panasonic, joint creator with Sony of the AVCHD format, will begin selling two high definition digital camcorders based on the recording format in Japan during December.

One of the models, the HDC-SD1, records onto a Secure Digital (SD) memory card, storing around 90 minutes of footage on a 4GB card at a 6Mbps recording rate.

The HDC-DX1 records onto conventional DVDs, with up to one hour of recording possible on a dual layer DVD.

They both record at 1080i, and feature a 3CCD sensor for improved picture.

The SD card camera measures just 74 x 69 x 142 mm, and weighs 430 grams excluding the battery, whilst the DVD model measures 92 x 91 x 163 mm and weighs 680 grams.

The HDC-SD1 launches on 1st December with a bundled 4GB card, whilst the HDC-DX1 will come out two weeks later. No international plans for release or pricing have been announced yet.
