The famed first-person shooter game gets fleshed out in movie form in this futuristic Aliens-style sci-fi action flick starring The Rock. He leads a team of marines whose mission to Mars involves locking down a scientific research station where an experiment has gone badly wrong and now "necromutants" have run amok (don’t you just hate it when that happens?).
Hollywood keeps trying to turn the active gaming experience into something suitable for a more passive film audience (shouting at the screen doesn’t count, or help). This is one of the better received efforts, though that isn’t saying an awful lot. The Rock might not be Bill Paxton, but he still has a reasonable amount of charm and a compelling screen presence.
Obviously viewers should not expect an evening of quiet reflection and intellectual stimulation with Doom. Think of it as a guilty pleasure and join the starship troopers on Saturday December 30th.
