The Full Monty meets Priscilla Queen of the Desert in Sunday’s HD movie premiere. Don’t worry guys, this month sees plenty of explosive (if hardly classic) action with Doom, Domino and Transporter 2 also getting their first HDTV screenings.
For now, it’s Brit comedy time with this story of a reluctant shoe factory owner Charlie (Ned Kelly’s Joel Edgerton) whose business hits a rough patch due to cut-price imports. His radical solution is to bring out a new line of sexy footwear with the help of “Lola”, an outrageous cross-dresser (played by Chjwetel Ejiofor, who’s been garnering attention in such movies as Dirty Pretty Things, Serenity, Children of Men and Inside Man)...
Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost co-stars, though to be honest, with Kinky Boots he was probably only filling time and paying his bills until the upcoming Hot Fuzz, which we are just dying to see.
Made by former TV director Julian Jarrold, Kinky Boots is familiar fare (the fact that it comes from the same producers as Calendar Girls will surprise no-one) but it’s cheerier than, say, Neil Jordan’s transvestite dramas The Crying Game and Breakfast on Pluto.
The movie fitted perfectly for some critics; the BBC said it was “slick and impossible to dislike”, though the New York Times’ verdict was a dismissive “silly.” Decide for yourself on Sunday, 17 December.
