Toshiba announced yesterday that they've developed "the world's first" 50GB capacity HD DVD.
The current maximum storage for a HD DVD is 30GB. This development potentially quashes Blu-ray's storage advantage.
Not surprisingly, details are sparse, and nothing physical was actually demonstrated - but we believe Tosh don't we?
Of course, we've already seen TDK announce 100GB and 200GB prototypes of Blu-ray discs so extra capacity on these optical discs isn't all that new. Having the hardware to actually read and write these extended formats is quite another matter, though.
I'm not sure the film-watching consumer really cares about storage capacity (though those wanting to backup large amounts of data will be) so long as they get their movie and extras on one disc.
