We reported last year that China will get its own version of HD DVD, and we've also read that VMD is being aimed at China. However, Neoseeker has reported that China and Taiwan want a high definition disc format based on red laser technology (that already used for standard DVDs) rather than blue.
EVD and HD-FVD will apparently be cheaper than HD DVD and Blu-ray, though HD-FVD at most stores 15GB on a triple-layer disc. The new format discs require new players, just as blue-laser discs do, though they may well be cheaper.
Whether this will have any impact on the West is likely to depend on a number of factors including studio acceptance, hardware availability, and region coding. I can't see it being a particular threat to HD DVD and Blu-ray in markets where those formats are already becoming established.
