Last week we had Pandemic, now we get Killer Wave, demonstrating that if deadly viruses don’t get you then other forces of nature probably will. Unlike the various sobering documentaries on tsunami and related phenomena, this four-hour miniseries is planted firmly in the realms of fiction in a scenario so preposterous it makes James Bond and 24 look like fly-on-the-wall insights into reality.
Killer Wave sees rogue corporations in cahoots with terrorists to ignite nuclear bombs under the Atlantic ocean bed, triggering a series of tidal waves that wipe out huge swathes of the east coast of the United States, with just hours to go before a further attack…
Made in Canada, there could be a sneaky bit of social commentary at work here about its neighbour’s current political situation, suggesting that the US could be more fearful of terrorism causing a huge wave than climate change, but we suspect this production is really just going for a '70s-style disaster thriller with a contemporary spin. The cast includes Tom Skerrit (Alien, Contact) and Angus Mcfadyen (Braveheart, Saw III).
If you think it’s always the US that gets to feature in disaster dramas like this, well, the same production company is also working on The Flood, which sees London go under water. Isn't that what the Thames Barrier is there to stop?
