Toshiba have told BetaNews that they're still researching whether their new triple-layer HD DVD format that can hold up to 51GB of data will actually work on existing HD DVD players.
Someone commenting on that article pointed to a recent Toshiba press release that states: "Toshiba has confirmed the disc structure and its successful operation." However, this probably means lab testing, not real-world testing on existing consumer equipment.
The release also states "Toshiba aims to secure approval of the new disc by the DVD Forum within this year."
You have to wonder whether Toshiba's own first and second generation HD DVD players will play their new discs.
