New Media Enterprises (NME), the company behind the HD VMD format, has announced that it has struck a distribution deal with US-based PC Rush to bring HD VMD products to the US market.
The three-year deal will see PC Rush distributing and marketing the HD VMD Media Player Duo ($199) and HD VMD Media Player Quattro ($249), both of which will allow consumers to play their existing DVDs upconverted to high definition, as well as play any VMD discs that materialise.
We've covered the basics of HD VMD before, and speculated on content. The format does indeed sound versatile, but we'll have to see how the US public, who are already more deeply immersed in the HD DVD/Blu-ray debacle, respond to yet another format.
VMD is currently being adopted by content providers and distributors in 12 regions worldwide, including Brazil, Central Europe, China, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Japan, the Middle East Russia, Scandinavia, and the United States.
