Sunday February 4 sees the most-watched live sporting event of the year take place at the Dolphin Stadium in Miami. The NFL’s Super Bowl XLI is also being screened live in the UK by Sky Sports in HD for the first time (as well as with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound).
The Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears are contending for the big prize. It’s the first time the Bears have been in the Super Bowl since winning Super Bowl XX in 1986, while the Colts are making their first appearance since they beat Dallas in Super Bowl V, when the game was held in in Baltimore.
Super Bowl XLI is the first US sports event to be screened in HD by Sky Sports (the first Super League match is also in HD on February 4). The occasion is also famous for its spectacular pre-game and half-time shows, which this year features Cirque du Soleil before the match, with Billy Joel singing the national anthem and Prince performing at half-time.
In September 2006, Sky Sports renewed its commitment with the NFL in a four-year deal for live games and support programming. The Super Bowl’s potential worldwide audience is a staggering 1 billion people and the action will be covered by a dazzling 47 different high definition cameras, as reported recently.
