Why porn won't decide the high definition disc war
Whilst the US adult film industry appears to be undecided as to whether to plump for HD DVD or Blu-ray, and some are saying that porn could be a major influencer in which format eventually dominates, others from within the industry are saying otherwise.
After all, the media landscape has changed dramatically since the VHS versus Betamax war that many say porn won for VHS.
"I don't think the consumer has chosen yet whether they're going to be purchasing Blu-ray or HD [DVD]. Certainly, the porn consumer hasn't made that choice," explained Drew Rosenfeld, creative director for Hustler Video. "I think their choice is at home, on their computer, on their iPod, on their cell phone, where they don't have a home full of all of this smut. They can keep it private on their computer, where they can dispose of it that fast."
There are now many ways of consuming movie content, not just on one type of optical disc or another. There's also a question over whether consumers want high definition porn.
"We're not talking about 'Star Wars' here, I don't think you need 1080p," said Russ Crupnick, vice president and senior industry analyst for the NPD Group.
Adult movie studios typically work on a much smaller budget and scale than the big Hollywood studios, so they can't invest in a format that may or may not be a consumer hit.
