Philips scraps scanning backlight technology
According to Heise Online, Philips is to discontinue production of hot-cathode fluorescent lamps (HCFL), the component that their scanning backlight technology requires.
Marketed under the Clear LCD moniker, scanning backlight is supposed to reduce motion blur on LCD especially during fast-moving scenes. The backlight is brighter than on more traditional CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamps) LCDs, with each pixel being illuminated for a shorter period of time.
Heise speculate that the cost involved in manufacturing HCFLs is the reason for Philips abandonment of the technology.
What isn't obvious is what Philips will do now, though they're sure to have a strategy in place.
