Unbelievable! I'm impressed, and jealous, that around 100 gamers who turned up for the London launch of the PlayStation 3 were given a free 46-inch high definition TV and a free cab ride home (do you know how hard it is to get home from London at 1am, even without a cutting edge bit of gear and a hulking great telly?)
I'm sure everyone queuing was a die-hard PS3 fan (or an eBay freak wanting to sell six to unsuspecting folk who couldn't pre-order one) but, dare I say it, this almost felt more like "Buy a 46-inch HDTV, get a PS3 free."
In total, it cost Sony a cool quarter-of-a-million pounds or so to pull off the give away.
Ritatsu Thomas, 17, who had headed the queue for 36 hours, said it had been worth the wait. "I feel fantastic. I'm delighted that everyone here also gets a television."
Shouldn't you have been in school for some of that time, Ritatsu?
I'm wondering how many more people would've turned up had the free TV offer been public knowledge.
Lucky people.

Only 100 people turned up, thats lame! (how many of that 100 only showed up after the phone call from their mates about the free TV deal)
Still at £2.000 a piece x100, £200.000 is pobably cheaper than thier psp viral advertising crap and better press too.
Well done Sony if you can just bribe another 15,000,0000 customers by the end of year you might reach 2nd in the console war.
£3000,000,000 should do the trick :)
Only 60 in France!

The playstation 3 is much better than the xbox 360. Not only does it have a larger hard drive (60GB compared to XBox's 20GB) but it also has HDMI which the Xbox 360 does not have. This imrpves the graphics even more. So i'm pretty sure Sony are going to be able to sell more than 15,000,000 consoles

I'm judging by your comment that you are either very young or just really nieve so i'm not even going to bother ripping your post apart but i suggest you google HDMI and do some research before you post stupid comments.
Despite the fanboy nature of the anonymous comment, Slim, there is some justification for rating HDMI as superior to the analogue components the XBox has. In less than favourable connections, HDMI will outperform component. There is also the issue of what will happen if movie studios decide to include HDCP, which will then downscale analogue outputs to near DVD quality.
Whilst the connection doesn't improve the graphics of the actual machine per se, it does improve how it is transmitted to the display.
Time will tell which system is 'better'. There are more considerations than simply hard drive size and connection.
I do know that Microsoft have stated they will support Blu-ray if it becomes the dominant format.
Who's to say they won't put HDMI on a future Xbox or drive add-on?
Andy, I have no real argument with you're comment, there is some debate on the inclusion of HDMI and even strong rumors that the next 360 model will include HDMI support and a 120gig hd.
I don't personally rate it's inclusion very important but as you seem to agree the last anonymous comment was under some kind of illusion.
Sony are very good at selling Tech spec and meaningless numbers that most of their consumer's do not understand, yes MS do it too but Sony have turned it into an art.
P.S. Andy, do you have any family in the Wiltshire area, my mother is doing geneology on the Merrett family and i do'nt think it's a very comon name
Hi Slim.
My knowledge of the Merrett name is woefully inadequate. My immediate family aren't from the Wiltshire area but that's not to say further generations back aren't. It's something I'm interested in.
To save the risk of going off-topic here, if you leave another comment with your email address (not sure if the one you've left before is a real one) - it won't be published but I can see it, and we can compare notes :)
Hiya,
Just some tech stuff on the Component vs HDMI issues.
From what I can gather the max resolution by Component is 1080i compared to HDMI being 1080P. Not a great issue if you don't have a 1080P capable set to plug into, but if you do then HDMI is the preferred route. HMDI will not run foul of any HDCP issues that may crop up such as downscaling of content over analogue (Component) connections.
As an aside as an observer of such things, it seems that as soon as a Sony badge appears on a piece of kit for some people the red mist descends. I noticed this a while back when I was researching my new TV (Sony 46X btw) on another forum. Boy could these folk go off topic!!!
I think you can transfer 'full HD' over component, but will probably embarrass myself by saying that and being proved wrong. Will check.
Yes, Kirsty, you know which companies are going to get the most arguments don't you? Microsoft, Apple, Sony... and I write about all of them! Makes it fun, though. I think.
I wish I waited to get one of those awesome tvs. xbox 360 is still better though
