Warner set June date for production of first single-layer Total HD discs
Warner Brothers' continue to push forward with their Total HD hybrid discs. We first reported on them at this year's CES, and now WB say that the initial limited-capacity discs could be ready for market as early as June.
Just to jog your memory, in this landscape of multiple competing formats, Total HD offers a single disc with one side formatted as Blu-ray, and the other as HD DVD. The first discs will feature a single layer of both - in other words 15GB capacity for HD DVD and 25GB for Blu-ray.
Ramping up a little, a dual layer (30GB) HD DVD side coupled with a single layer Blu-ray disc could be ready by August. No definite date was given for dual-layer of both formats.
With only Warner investing in Total HD so far, consumer appeal - and titles - could be limited.
For the sake of reminder, as well as the two major competing high definition disc formats Blu-ray and HD DVD) we have new kid HD VMD, triple layer/format discs (also from Warner), plus suggestions that discs are going out of fashion anyway, thanks to Flash and the Internet.
Oh for a simple technological life.
