Plasma TVs on the way out? Hitachi don't think so, and they're planning an aggressive international marketing campaign, targeting those who are demanding larger flat screen televisions.
Hitachi are currently the world's number five plasma TV manufacturer, but has recently been boosted thanks to gaining greater capacity at its production plants in Miyazaki, Southern Japan.
They're aiming for a 13% market share in the year to March 2008, from around 9% in the past year, and aim to sell 1.45 million plasma TVs in 2007/8, mainly to the US.
"The North America market will be a key part of our strategy going forward," senior VP Makoto Ebata said.
They're not resting on LCD production, either, expecting to sell 800,000 LCD TVs this year, up from 500,000 last year.
