LG Electronics may be advised to drop or sell off its plasma TV business, amidst competition from LCD and other manufacturers.
An official at LG Electronics stated that a decision would be made over the coming month, based on advice from a management consultancy firm.
The report in The Hankyoreh suggests that the whole plasma industry is facing a downturn, due to falling prices and the rise in popularity of LCD TVs.
Philips announced last month that it was phasing out plasma production in most markets. Having said that, some manufacturers are pushing ahead with plasma, including Philips and Samsung.
Toshiba has said that LCD now outsells plasma in the UK. With LCD screens becoming more popular at larger sizes - previously the exclusive domain of the plasma set - plus new display technologies such as TMOS and laser TV, could plasma really be on the way out?
