The CEO of Ofcom, Ed Richards, has promised that within the next couple of weeks talks will commence with public service broadcasters about putting high definition on Freeview.
Ofcom believes that between four and six HD channels could be offered within the existing digital terrestrial spectrum.

What is the source for this report please.
Although it's welcome news, there is an OFCOM consultation that recently closed: "The Digital Dividend Revue" that should be formally completed first, because more than the Public Service Broadcasters objected to the sale of spectrum and told OFCOM that they had got their facts wrong about terrestrial HDTV possibilities.
I'm a bit cynical about Ed Richards personal soothsaying. His OFCOM bio includes: "Prior to Ofcom Ed was Senior Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister for Media, telecoms, internet and e-govt".
He helped formulate the policy of selling off analogue spectrum that is being objected to, and was responsible for both the bad research (that purported to show that people didn't expect HDTV as the norm) and erroneous calculations of what was possible on terrestrial channels - so he's hardly likely to change it.
