Vita Sackville West's celebrated Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Kent is the first location featured in this new HD series on Sky Arts, beginning on Sunday April 15 and repeated throughout the week.
The makers were granted unprecedented access to National Trust properties around the country. The programmes promise to be more than just a nicely shot stroll around a pleasant setting. The five-part series also provides exclusive insights into the gardens’ original designs and plans, aiming to bring to life the stories behind each garden and the people who designed and built them.
The romantic garden at Sissinghurst was designed by the unconventional Bloomsbury Group poet, novelist and gardener Vita Sackville-West and her husband, author and diplomat Sir Harold Nicolson. It has ten different sections, intended to resemble enclosed ‘rooms’, each with a different look and feel. It was first opened to the public in 1938.
