Set your PVR – Superstorm, BBC HD, Sunday, 9pm
It’s hurricane season again and the southern states of the US are bracing themselves for the worst storms on record, stronger even than the Category 4 Hurricane Katrina.
Superstorm is one of those transatlantic HDTV co-productions with a mixture of UK and US actors and an epic storyline drawn from recent headlines that comes across like an expensive dramatisation of a Horizon episode (in fact there is an accompanying documentary, The Science Of Superstorms, afterwards on BBC Two).
It will come as little surprise that Superstorm is from the same team as the earlier Supervolcano. Set in the near future, it juggles the threat of extreme weather brought on by climate change with the clash of egos among the scientists who are trying to deflect the impact of the hurricanes.
In the first episode, as computer experts and meteorologists argue about what to do, the manipulative George Katzenberg (Tom Sizemore of Saving Private Ryan and Heat) proposes Project Stormshield.
The series – being simulcast on BBC One and BBC HD from Sunday April 15 – also stars Nicola Stephenson, Chris Potter, JR Bourne, Jana Carpenter, Cas Anvar and Nicolas Wright.
