Sony looking to push OLED technology as viable alternative to LCD TV

sony.pngIn January, Sony showed off their 27 inch OLED high definition TV prototype, so their recent announcement might initially sound like a step backwards from that.

However, Sony seem keen to launch a new line of super-thin OLED HDTVs, and have shown off an 11-inch OLED TV at a Tokyo display conference.

The technology offers brighter, more colourful images than LCD and plasma sets, plus the ability to manufacture even thinner panels - just one inch deep compared to three or four inches deep for LCD and plasma sets. It's much more expensive technology at present, which is why Sony have openly stated that they plan to market new OLED TVs as a status symbol to begin with.

Obviously, an 11 inch set isn't going to cut it against 40 inch plus LCDs and plasmas, but Sony are still working on the technology.

“It won’t be easy for OLED TVs to replace LCD TVs, but we would like to turn OLED TVs into a big new business," said Sony Executive Deputy President Katsumi Ihara.

There are reports that Samsung, Toshiba, and Matsushita are amongst other companies interested in developing large OLED sets.

It just adds to the plethora of display technologies available. Take your pick from LCD, plasma, OLED, TMOS, SED, or Laser TV.
