Sharp has introduced the world's smallest blue-violet laser for use in high definition disc players. The GH04020A4G semiconductor measures just 3.3mm in diameter and will be available as US$99 samples from 13th June. Mass production will begin in July.
The device draws 10mW of power and should offer 10,000 hours of operation. Presumably this will open the door for more compact drives.
