As a break from the HD DVD / Blu-ray war, here's some news on another old favourite: lawsuits.
California-based Target Technology Company is suing Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sony Pictures, and Sony DADC, claiming that they are manufacturing Blu-ray optical discs that infringe on a patent it owns for silver-based alloys used as reflective layer materials on optical discs.
It's not yet clear whether the alleged infringement applies to all of Sony's discs, or just a portion.
If this turns out to be something that's intrinsic to the makeup of Blu-ray discs, then it could have knock-on effects for other disc manufacturers.
If, however, it's just a material that's used in some of Sony's products, damage could be limited to that company.
Target are seeking a permanent injunction preventing Sony from violating its patent rights in the future, as well as damages with interest, due to "deliberate and willful infringement".
Depending on the outcome, and scope, of this lawsuit, it could be costly for both Sony and Blu-ray.

sony sucks :P
