Alienware has introduced its new Hangar18 HD Entertainment Centre, combining a built-in 5.1 surround sound amplifier capable of pushing out 200W per channel, an on board HDMI interface with HDCP compliance and 1080p capability, wireless functionality, two AMD Athlon 64 dual-core processors, and AMD Live! Entertainment Suite.
It comes with up to 2TB of hard drive storage, up to four TV tuners, and a high definition digital video recorder (DVR).
What it doesn't have, out of the box, is a Blu-ray or HD DVD drive.
“Alienware's Hangar18, in combination with the AMD LIVE! solution, enables total control over how consumers access, manage and share their personal media to help them get the most out of their digital entertainment,” said Joe Menard, corporate vice president of AMD’s Consumer Business. “Backed by the power of AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors, the Hangar18 delivers the performance to enjoy an immersive home theatre, surround-sound experience in a stylish, all-in-one form factor designed for the living room.”
The machine definitely seems to be aimed at those willing to download content from the Net. Nothing wrong with that, but if you want HD DVD or Blu-ray, it looks as if you'll need a standalone player for that - and another HDMI input on your telly.
