Latest MacBook Pros step closer to HD

OK, forget what we wrote last week - it looks as if MacBook Pros are stepping towards high definition capabilities sooner than expected.

The latest update to Apple's professional notebook range not only includes upgraded Core 2 Duo processors, but also an optional widescreen TFT display for the 17-inch MacBook Pro that supports a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 - great for HD viewing and editing work.

In addition, the graphics card is an HDCP-compliant NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT.

Of course, what's still missing is any way of getting content from high definition optical media onto the machine. FastMac has already released their own drive, but whether it will work with the MacBook Pro is another matter.

In addition, the current incarnation of OS X can't handle HD DVD or Blu-ray, although surely a software update could provide that support, if compliant hardware was in place, rather than having to wait for Leopard to arrive.

Even so, it seems as if Apple fans won't have to wait until 2008 for HD support, though how much longer Apple will sit on the HD format fence is another issue.
