Since we posted news of Blockbuster's decision to almost exclusively stock Blu-Ray films in its US stores, Sony has unsurprisingly hailed the choice for sharpening its competitive edge in the HD format war.
"The availability of movie titles is very important. The move by Blockbuster is very positive," said Daichi Yamafuji, spokesperson for Sony Corp. in Tokyo.
In what resembles a heavyweight Sumo fight, large Japanese corporations have been investing heavily to decide the future of next-generation discs with Sony and Panasonic in the Blu-Ray corner competing against the likes of Toshiba in the HD-DVD camp.
Sony has been struggling to assert its authority in this arena after suffering huge operating losses when the PS3 failed to outpoint Microsoft's Xbox360 and Nintendo's Wii. And, the Japanese giants recently slashed the prices of its Blu-Ray players in the US to compete with less expensive HD-DVD offerings.
Blockbuster's recent decision has put the ball back in Blu-Ray's court but the score is still a stalemate and it's still too early to say which format will be crowned the winner.
