In yet more blatant self-promotion, Sony is offering ‘revenue sharing’ deals for Blu-ray rentals, which it believes will allow retailers to stock Blu-ray discs earlier than they might otherwise.
From September, all of Sony’s new Blu-ray releases and select catalogue titles will be under the agreement through the Rentrak Coproration – although neither firm is willing to disclose details just yet.
Sony Picture Home Entertainment president, David Bishop, said, “Virtually all retailers can have Blu-ray on a revenue-sharing basis. We think it’s important to the retailer, so they are perceived as being on the cutting edge of new technology.”
It seems like a bold move since investigations by the European Commission are already underway trying to discover if Blu-ray developers are using anti-competitive business practices to beat rival HD-DVD.
